Allen was elected the first bishop in 1816.īishop Richard Allen Park sits near a property line that once separated the Waters’ home and other formerly enslaved Black residents named Thomas Craill and Judy Miller in what is now the 5th Ward of the township. In 1794, Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was consecrated in Philadelphia, the first church building within the A.M.E. In 1784, Allen visited Radnor Township, coming to the home of Caesar Waters and his wife, Phebe, who welcomed him and gave him a place to stay. The panel honors Bishop Richard Allen (1760–1831), the first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church who was one of the most influential Black leaders of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and who visited the formerly enslaved residents who lived in the area. The Radnor community gathered at the Bishop Richard Allen Park on Brook Street in Radnor Township on June 25 to dedicate the Bishop Richard Allen Historic Panel.
